Thanks to our in house PR guy Evan Munt for this.
Levels Raceway set the scene for Round 1 of the 2009/10 OSCA season and
luckily the weather held off for all 3 races. The track was still cold and
had a few damp places for the first race which played into the hands of our
newest pole-sitter James Marshall in his impressive Subaru. Marshall held the
lead for a number of laps before Dave Agnew’s Rotary Volvo took the lead
which he held to take the first win of the season. Unfortunately for
Marshall the engine didn’t hold for the race and he DNF'd which gave Lawrence
Knowler in his return second ahead of Raymond Harts great looking Skyline
just holding out another newcomer Shane Roughan. Matt Dunn who has
converted from Sport Saloon this season in his very quick DX Corolla took
out 5th from regulars Garth Somerville and Russell Mortimer.
The first race had a few casualties which included Wayne Ross
with fuel issues, Pierre Neame electrical, Cronin engine, Etwell engine
& Dawson
getting a bit frisky off the start and getting a tyre cut in the process.
The second race was a reverse grid start and was lead the whole way by
Etwell after fixing his engine dramas. The fastest 3 of Dawson, Knowler and
Agnew (who again set the fastest time of the race) made their way through
the field to finish in that order with Knowler paying special attention to
Dawson’s rear bumper for most of the race with nothing between them. Hart
took 5th narrowly holding out Dunn with Mortimer getting the better of
Roughan and Somerville.
The handicap race 3 saw the return of Neame after sorting the electrical
issues the "kiwi way" (bypassing everything!) and he started
alongside Ross and Mortimer. Ross seemed to have his fuel issues sorted and
took the lead holding out Neame for the first few laps with Mortimer in hot
pursuit. Dunn was next to leave and made steady progress onto the leaders
with the fastest 4 now including Etwell all leaving half a minute behind.
By the end of the race Ross had succumbed to his fuel issues and dropped
back leaving Neame to narrowly hold on to his maiden OSCA win by just
keeping Knowler out by less than half a second with Dawson and Agnew just
getting ahead of Dunn for the top 5. Etwell was next with the top 6 all
finishing on the pit straight together.
The second round is at Teretonga and I urge all members to make their way
down if they can as Teretonga is a great track and the weather really isn’t
that bad usually. Touch wood! Hopefully numbers will be better across all
classes and the crowd really look forward to seeing the OSCA class with the
islands fastest sedan cars!

Levels greeted us for round 2 with a cold gloomy day and
it seems that was fitting for what was to unveil to some competitors.
During qualifying Dave Agnew had an oil line come free which dumped
everything on the track with the final turn coming onto pit straight being
the most slippery. Dave ended up spinning on the oil and losing
the roof off the Volvo with Colin Dawson doing the same and just managing
to keep the RX7 off the pit straight wall. Luckily for him he had already
put in a quick time which he held for pole as no-one else could get a good
time in due to the slippery conditions. more...

Rain was falling at Manfeild when the PRINTSTOP OSCA cars
headed on to the track for the final race of the year. Cameron Jones had
closed the points gap to Andy Greenslade to only two points. It had been a
classic Rotary versus V8, David versus Goliath battle all season. Jones and
Greenslade lined up side by side for the handicap race and fought hard
through heavy rain and poor visibility. Jones won the battle but lost the
war. He finish one place ahead of Greenslade in the race but one point
behind in the championship. Greenslade took his third New Zealand OSCA
championship. more...

An
exciting weekend’s racing in the PRINTSTOP OSCA Super Saloons was marred by
a huge crash at Manfeild. David Steel crashed his Camaro heavily in the
last corner of the final lap of Race two on Sunday morning. David had just
set a new lap record for OSCA of 1:09.1 and was challenging Andy
Greenslade, also in a Camaro, for the lead. He attempted to carry more
speed through the final corner to set up a drag race for the finish line
but ran wide. He dropped is outside rear wheel over the edge of the ripple
strip into the dirt. The car turned, slid across the infield and slammed
into the tire wall. David was knocked out in the accident and taken to Palmerston North Hospital.
He was later discharged and is recovering at home. Everyone associated with
OSCA wish David a speedy recovery. more...

Kiwi Sports Sedans is now OSCA North Island
At the recent AGM the Kiwi Sports Sedans members
decided to adopt the Technical Regulations of the OSCA (Open Saloon Car Association). OSCA have been running a very popular and
successful series in the South Island for
about 30 years. Along with the change of Technical Regulations the Kiwi
Sports Sedans have changed their name to OSCA North Island.
This change is very significant for Motorsport in New Zealand.
We now have a consistent set of rules nationally for open saloon car
racing. We are planning a 4 round national series to be run in
conjunction with the existing North and South Island
series. Cars from the North Island will travel to the South
Island for rounds at Timaru and Ruapuna in January. A big
field of South Island cars will Travel to the North Island
for the Easter Meeting at Taupo and for a round at Manfeild. Expect fields
of around 30 of New
Zealand's fastest saloons at these
events.
The rule changes mean that all former Kiwi Sports
Sedans cars are eligible but the new rules make provision for Space Frame cars and for 4 Wheel Drive cars.
The draft Technical Regulations are available on
this site.
Stay tuned. The 2004/05 OSCA series
promises to provide the best racing in New Zealand for both Spectators
and Competitors.
